WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland and the United States initialled a deal on Saturday for 48 F-16 fighter planes worth six billion dollars in what was believed to be eastern Europe's biggest defence contract to date.
Polish Defence Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski said the agreement with principal contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT: Research, Estimates) was linked to U.S. investments in Poland which he hoped would top six billion dollars.
"The U.S. investment cannot be lower than six billion dollars, but...it is highly probable that it will be above six billion," Szmajdzinski told reporters. "We would like the offset deal to be finalized in the nearest several weeks."
The two countries initialled a letter of offer and acceptance on the terms of the aircraft agreement. Once the investment offset package is agreed, the F-16 deal will be finalised, officials said.
